SPARKit with PBG!

The Day of the Girl is about highlighting, celebrating, discussing, and advancing girls lives and opportunities across the globe. When girls come together to talk about things that really matter to us, we can teach other people–grownups, boys, girls all across the world–a new way of thinking about issues like gender stereotypes, discrimination, and opportunity. We love their mission and we’re dedicating this month’s SPARKit to them–so join us and SPARKit for Day of the Girl!

These days, marketing and media are filled with imagery and messages telling little and big girls alike that their worth is in their sexy, thin appearance.  Girls are told that Victoria’s Secret thongs are “aspirational,” that uploading images of their American Apparel-clad bottoms to be scored and judged is girl power, and that choosing “stupid” over “smart” by flashing their breasts, as Diesel suggests, is fun and funny.

Empowering girls with media literacy isn’t enough. We want opportunities to think and work together, public spaces to critique and talk back, and tools to demand a more diverse and healthier set of messages. Powered By Girl (PBG) is a girl-driven media activism site that capitalizes on a love of satire and humor, the desire to be seen and heard, and a passion for social media.  PBG is also a coalition of girls, sister organizations, and allies instigating awareness, sparking activism, and transforming the landscape of girls’ media to reflect more creative images of girls and women.

This SPARKit invites you to engage in a little media activism of your own.  Learn about culture jamming and PBG’ing ads, download copies of ads to talk about and hone your PBG skills. Then use our “PBG this ad” app to remake the ads you love to hate:

Download your creations on Facebook for your friends to see, and send or email them to the company with PBG’s and SPARK’s best wishes.

Go ahead, click here and find your inner satirist, because we’re SPARKing a Movement one PBG’ed ad at a time.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
