Ever wanted to tell your story about dealing with sexualization–how you live with it, how you push back, what makes protesting hard, and important? Ever wonder what it used to be like for the adult women in your life to be sexualized and what they did about it? One of our favorite SPARK Summit action spots was ASAP’s Hear A Story/Tell a Story Booth where girls interviewed their friends and adult mentors about the sexualization of girls in the media and times when they felt objectified or sexualized. This new SPARKit gives you step-by-step directions to produce your own Hear A Story/Tell A Story interview!

The ASAP Initiative—Analyzing Sexuality for Action and Policy—is the Northeast’s center for ideas and information about adolescents’ sexuality and women’s sexuality. Housed at Hunter College and The Graduate Center at CUNY, ASAP shapes public conversations to effect social change, taking research beyond academia and into activism. You can catch their research blog: Real Talk about Really New Research on the Sexualization of Girls, right here on the SPARK site!

This SPARKit has four steps:

    • Talk about it! Watch a clip from Killing Us Softly 4 and discuss the meaning of advertising, sexualization, and the media’s affect on women.
    • Hear a story! Check out this clip from the first SPARK Summit of girls interviewing their peers about their experiences with sexualization and gender stereotypes:

    • Tell a story! Get a video camera, a couple of friends, and a list of questions, and talk about what you’ve seen and heard so far.
    • Send it in! Send your completed videos to the ASAP Initiative and we’ll tell you how to get it up on our site!
